Arts agenda: Asia's finest artists featured at Art Taipei, Museum Embankment Festival Frankfurt

The 18th edition of Asia’s longest-running art fair, Art Taipei, will showcase Asian art creation at its best. On the other side of the globe, the Museum Embankment Festival will line an 8 km stretch of riverbank with hundreds of artworks.

The New York Museum of Modern Art, or MoMa, puts on a culinary cinema series to honor the head of the Berlin film festival, Dieter Kosslick, and his twin passions of cinema and fine dining with Carte Blanche: Dieter Kosslick, the Culinary Cineaste. Kosslick is a vegetarian and food quality activist who has been spearheading Berlinale for 10 years. He's long been engaged in issues related to food, pleasure and ecology, as well as their cultural significance to cinematic presentation.

Now in its 18th year, Art Taipei is the longest-standing art fair in Asia. It touts itself as the most professional Art Fair dealing in Chinese art and a hot spot for international collectors looking to invest in young Asian artists. Approximately 40,000 people attended Art Taipei in 2010. Asia is home to a long list of "international" art fairs in 2011 including Art Hong Kong, Art Singapore, Art Tokyo, the Korean International Art Fair, Beijing Contemporary Art Fair, and ShContemporary.

Museum Embankment Festival Frankfurt

For the three days of the Museum Embankment Festival, German galleries collaborate to display stunning pieces of artwork, borrowed from their gallery collections, along an 8 km stretch of riverbank in Frankfurt, Germany. Visitors can view the hundreds of masterpieces that line the riverbank while also enjoying the additional outdoors attractions such as music and drama performances that take place during the festival. Approximately 3 million people attend the free event each year, making it one of Europe’s largest cultural celebrations.

The Ars Electronica Festival is an annual event that harnesses innovative collisions between state-of-the-art technology, provocative art, and intellectual thinking. Since 1979 the festival has invited artists, scientists and technologists to enrich the minds of people around them through festival activities such as exhibitions, performances, discussions and lectures. It is considered to be the most important digital arts festival in the world and attracts 35,000 visitors annually. More than 300 events are planned for the 2011 edition, which will focus on the theme of "ORIGIN – How It All Begins."

15th Philadelphia Live Arts Festival
More than 1,200 performances will be included in this wide-ranging annual performing arts festival. Theater, dance, experimental art and other events attract tens of thousands of attendees. In addition to the local Fringe Festival plays, Back to Back Theater from Australia and Belgium's Les Ballets de-ci de-là will perform as well as artists from France, England and India. Comparable to San Francisco's International Arts Festival in May.
41st Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival
North America's largest urban arts festival features an array of visual and performing arts, dance, theater, film, comedy and kids events. But the diverse musical line-up is perhaps the biggest draw. This year it includes Toro y Moi, Wiz Khalifa, Ray LaMontagne, Broken Social Scene and Hall & Oates, among many more. Located in the middle of the city at the 74-acre Seattle Center with more than 100,000 visitors paying $35 for single tickets and $90 for a 3-day pass. Comparable to the New Yorker Festival and Philadelphia Arts and Fringe Festival.
36th Toronto International Film Festival
A premiere North American cinema event, timed prior to awards season, the Toronto Festival has launched the best of international, Hollywood and Canadian cinema. The event is located at its new home in the Entertainment District, drawing a half-million attendees to screen 336 films from 64 countries, along with panel discussions and workshops. It joins Berlin, Cannes, Venice and Pusan as one of the top accredited film festivals.
15th Shanghai Art Fair and 5th ShContemporary

The Shanghai Art Fair and ShContemporary are the two major art fairs on Shanghai's art calendar. Shanghai Art Fair - China's largest - started in 1997 and is the leading event in scale amid major art fairs in Asia, while ShContemporary - The Asia Pacific Contemporary Art Fair- grows bigger every year with more and more interest from international art galleries. Launched in 2007, ShContemporary attracted close to 30,000 visitors and registered collectors from Europe, North America, China and the rest of Asia in 2010.
24th 20/21 British Art Fair

20/21 is an art fair that specializes in modern and contemporary art exclusively made by British artists. It’s the place to see 20th century masters such as Bacon, Freud, Frink, Frost, Hepworth, Hockney, Hodgson, Lanyon, Lowry, Moore, Nash, Piper, Riley, Scott, Sutherland and Spencer on show alongside contemporary works by Banksy, Hirst, and Emin.
15th Art Moscow

Hailed as the largest contemporary art fair in Eastern Europe, Art Moscow has become a mecca for cutting-edge works and forward-thinking art in Russia. The event attracts more than 20,000 visitors. New media and technology within art will be a feature throughout the event, with exhibitions such as Techno Russia, The Factory of Gestures: Body language in Film and a panel discussion about the role of young artists in contemporary art. While in Moscow, stop by the 4th Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art, which runs from September 22 to 30.
The tenth anniversary of the KIAF (Korea International Art Fair) will host more than 190 galleries from 17 different countries. The fair showcases the “most-up-to-date contemporary art works” from around the globe alongside the crème de la crème of Korea’s cutting edge art. Australia will be featured as part of the KIAF Guest Country program in 2011.
7th Fine Art Asia (formally HKIAAF)

The Fine Art Asia fair showcases a combination of fine art and antiques with hidden treasures that will appeal to collectors from all over the world. Leading Hong Kong and international galleries will present their collections at the fair which attracts members of the international art world, antique and art collectors and buyers from across the globe. More than 80 leading dealers will exhibit at this year’s event.
Frieze Art Fair
Frieze Art Fair is an annual event that groups together outstanding artwork from more than 170 contemporary art galleries from across the globe. Over 60,000 visitors come each year to explore the latest trends in contemporary art and to see work made by living artists. The event also includes a rich program of specially commissioned artworks, artist talks, film and performance projects, and artist-led education workshops. In 2012, the co-founders of Frieze will launch two new events, The satellite Frieze New York Fair in Randall’s Island, Manhattan from May 4-7, 2012 and the Frieze Masters which will take place in Regent’s Park, London from October 11-14, 2012.
