Artist Alice Instone explores the prominence of powerful female muses throughout history.

Her work draws attention to how we consume images of women and the female archetype, from the dangerous seductress to the alluring innocent.

Her work is currently on display at the Cob Gallery until 30 November.

The title of the exhibition, Because a Fire was in My Head, is taken from Yeats' ‘The Song of Wandering Aengus’, which talks of an elusive female muse.

Contributors to an accompanying catalogue about her work include writers Caitlin Moran and India Knight, Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti, model Laura Bailey, and playwright (and co-owner of the Cob Gallery) Polly Stenham.
