Parting shots: Captain Scott’s personal photographs of his legendary South Pole journey go on show
Portrait of Captain LEG Oates, October 1911: Herbert Ponting taught Scott as much as he could of the photographic arts in a few weeks. Portraiture was something at which Ponting excelled.
Captain Oates was from the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons and in charge of the ponies on the Terra Nova expedition, which he thought were a bunch of 'crocks'. Nevertheless, their performance exceeded expectations, in large part due to his care.
