An exhibition of the work of New York-based artist Charline von Heyl will open at the Tate Liverpool tomorrow.

Over forty large canvasses will be displayed, covering her work from 1990-2011. The exhibition will demonstrate the artist's eclectic approach to painting; she employs unconventional painting methods such as masking, layering, distorting, filtering and cloning effects to constantly reinvent her style.

Typical works use contrasting colours, sharp lines and juxtaposition of shapes to create what she calls a "new image that stands for itself as a fact”.

Von Heyl first exhibited in the early nineties in her native Germany but moved to New York in 1994 where she now has three studios– two dedicated to painting, and another for drawing and printmaking. All the work is created in the studio by hand but her recent style is inspired by the digital age.

“Good paintings have this tantalizing quality. And once you turn around, you absolutely cannot recapture them. They leave a hole in the mind, a longing," von Heyl once said. Her work can be found in major institutions across the world, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Musée d'Art Moderne, in Paris, but this is the first major UK-based exhibition of her work.
