An exhibition showcasing works shortlisted for the Threadneedle Prize for Painting & Sculpture worth £25,000 opened at the Mall Galleries in London today.

Now in its fourth year, the award aims to encourage new and emerging artists to make “fresh and intriguing works that are strong and topical observations on the world”.

This year marked a record for submissions with 4,350 works (more than double the submissions entered in 2010) considered by this year’s judging panel, Godfrey Worsdale, Lisa Milroy and Julie Lomax.

There is a £10,000 Visitors’ Choice prize which will be voted for by the viewing public to be awarded on top of the £25,000 for the overall winner and six £1,000 runner-up prizes.
