Global art events in October (reminder)

A rich mix of contemporary and traditional art events is taking place across the globe in October. Major art fairs, HKIAAF 09, FIAC 2009 and Frieze Art Fair provide an insight into the world of contemporary art and emerging international art trends while J.W Waterhouse: Garden of Enchantment, Georges Seurat. Pop Life : Art in a Material World
October 1, 2009 - January 17, 2010

Pop Life: Art in a Material World re-examines the later works of Andy Warhol and analyzes his influence on modern artists working with branding, self-promotion, mass media, celebrity and the artist's persona. Pop Life: Art in a Material World will present installations and recreate performative exploits that represent milestones in the careers of the exhibition's influential protagonists. Influential works by Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Keith Haring, Martin Kippenberger, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami will be exhibited in Pop Life: Art in a Material World.

J.W Waterhouse: Garden of Enchantment

Garden of Enchantment is the largest ever John William Waterhouse retrospective to be held and the first to feature artworks that span the artist's entire artistic career. Over 80 works will be featured in the exhibition, many of which have been loaned from galleries across the world. Waterhouse's famous large-scale works in oil will be accompanied by the artist's sketchbooks, studies in oil, chalk and pencil - some of which have never previously been exhibited in public. The exhibition will travel from the Royal Academy of Arts where it was shown from June 27 to September 13, 2009.

Joyous Machines: Michael Landy and Jean Tinguely

Joyous Machines: Michael Landy and Jean Tinguely will focus on the relationship between the two inventive artists. The exhibition will showcase the development of Tinguely's influential work - from his rarely examined early career to his later ‘auto-destructive' and performance works. The exhibition will also reveal the resulting works produced by Michael Landy that document and respond to Tinguely's most famous piece entitled Homage to New York - a self-destroying mechanical artwork that was in motion for 27 minutes before crashing to the ground and catching fire during a live performance at MOMA in 1960.

Georges Seurat. Figure in Space

Seventy works of art by famed artist Georges Seurat - a founding artist in the Pointillism movement - will be featured at the Kunsthaus Zürich in Switzerland. The young artist produced a limited number of artworks during his short career (the artist lived to 30) but these paintings presented images in a way that had never been seen before. Visitors to the exhibition will become aware of how the artist captured the imagination of his contemporaries through his unique use of scientific precision and pointillist techniques. The exhibition Figure in Space provides viewers with a rare opportunity to see a large collection of Seurat's paintings, drawings and oil studies exhibited together.

Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius

Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius will examine the approximately 50 works of art created by the artist, inventor and sculpture. It is the first exhibition to detail Leonardo's interest and influence on sculpture and will place his work alongside those who were inspired and influenced by the artist. The exhibition will be divided into three separate sections: Leonardo, Sculptor; Leonardo, Student; and Leonardo, Mentor. Each section will focus on a different area of the artist's career and will showcase his drawings, sketches, sculptures and concepts. The exhibition will travel to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles from March 23 to June 20, 2010.

Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889

The exhibition Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889 focuses on a period of transition in the life and art of French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin - a moment in time in which Gauguin started to use themes, motives and styles that would reappear in his later works and develop into elements that would later characterize the artist's signature style. The exhibition will run from October 4, 2009 to January 18, 2010 before travelling to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Turner Prize 2009

The often controversial Turner Prize was established in 1984 and is awarded to a British artist under 50 for his or her outstanding exhibition or other presentation of work in the twelve months preceding April 21, 2009. The winner of the Turner Prize receives £25,000 (€27, 300) and the other shortlisted artists receive £5,000 (€5,400) each. This year's shortlisted artists are Enrico David, Roger Hiorns, Lucy Skaer and Richard Wright. Work by the shortlisted artists will be shown in an exhibition at Tate Britain opening on October 6, 2009. The winner will be announced at Tate Britain on December 7, 2009 during a live broadcast by Channel 4.

Van Gogh's letters: The artist speaks

The exhibition Van Gogh's Letters: The artist speaks explores the relationship between Van Gogh's written words and his artwork. Over 120 original letters will be accompanied by the works of art they reference. The fragile and rarely exposed letters provide viewers with a comprehensive insight into Van Gogh's life as an artist and writer. The letters include rarely seen sketches of the paintings Van Gogh was working on when he wrote to his correspondents and present the viewer with the opportunity to compare the events taking place in his life with the subject matter he chose to paint. An iPhone application, " Yours, Vincent" and a website www.vangoghletters.org have been produced in collaboration with the exhibition and enable overseas viewers to read and view the letters from the comfort of their own home.

Almost 200 galleries and more than 3500 artists will be present at the 36th edition of FIAC in Paris. This famous contemporary Art Fair showcases the best in modern and contemporary art and is one of the leading launch-pads for up-and-coming artists. FIAC will be presented within the Tuileries Gardens and in the Cour Carrée at the Louvre Museum. Artworks are arranged in chronological order and range from electronic arts through painting, sculpture, installations, soundworks and conceptual art.
