British billboards are set to become masterpieces this summer in a new initiative to “flood the streets of the UK with the greatest art this country has ever created”.

Posters of artwork by well-known British artists will be pasted onto public billboards around the country in two weeks of August with the hope of inspiring a future generation of artists.

The project, called Art Everywhere, is being backed by the Tate Galleries and aims to showcase British art from the past 500 years.

The public is being asked to vote online for their favourite 50 works of art from a long list of 100, including John Millais’ Ophelia, L S Lowry’s Going to the Match and John Constable’s Salisbury Cathedral. Less well known works are also included.

Longlist nominee Damien Hirst said: “Art is for everyone, and everyone who has access to it will benefit from it. This project is amazing and gives the public a voice and an opportunity to choose what they want to see on their streets.”

Richard Reed, co-founder of Innocent Drinks who is also backing the project, said: “This is a joyful celebration with no agenda other than to flood our streets with art and celebrate the creative talents and legacy of this amazing country.”
