A selection of the best designs to come out of 2010 will be exhibited after a fierce examination of last year’s offerings were whittled down to an impressive shortlist by industry experts.

The nominees for this year's Brit Insurance Design Awards is an eclectic bunch ranging from the well established (such as Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane and BBC iPlayer) to some lesser known and more surprising pieces.

A handful of works were chosen from across architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive product and transport, and the shortlist will go on display at the Design Museum in London from 17 February until 6 June.

"It's interesting to see how themes of sustainability and social responsibility have emerged in this year's nominations, revealing both the importance of economical and social change in design over the last 12 months. It's a broad field and an exciting celebration of design," Alex Newson, curator of the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year Exhibition, told press.

Artist Antony Gormley will chair a high-profile judging panel, including designer Tom Dixon, editor of Icon magazine Justin McGuirk and style editor of Grazia magazine Paula Reed, and the winners of each category will be announced on 4 March.
