'Flux sports' take over Tate Modern's Turbine Hall
Mountain bikers entertained crowds outside London's Tate Modern yesterday, as part of the gallery's Long Weekend celebration. Performances and live events are being staged over the three days, including the first ever Flux-Olympiad. The Turbine Hall was given over to a series of bizarre "Flux sports", including slow-speed bicycle races, football played on stilts and balloon shot put. George Maciunas, founder of the Fluxus art group, came up with the idea in the 1960s, but died before it could be realised. Fluxus advocates describe it as the last major 20th-century art movement which the general public does not yet know about.
In line with the group's refusal to adhere to rules, members of the public competed in the games alongside Fluxus artists, led by organiser Larry Miller. Events continue at the gallery today and tomorrow.
