New York's Museum of Modern Art's outpost of contemporary art, P.S.1 opens several shows this week, with an emphasis on art of the 1960s -- the socio-political scene of the era and some of its key artists.

With a focus on one year of socio-political tumult, selections from the Museum of Modern Art's collection include photography, designs, drawings, and media exploring the excitement, anxieties, and events of the period. There is Sol LeWitt's minimalist sculpture, Helen Frankenthaler's abstract painting, films by Michael Snow, and Mel Bochner's room-sized installation, Theory of Painting. Other artists include Richard Avedon, John Cage, Jasper Johns, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, and Claes Oldenburg. The re-staging of MoMA's 1969 exhibition, Five Recent Acquisitions, with works by Larry Bell, Ron Davis, Robert Irwin, and Craig Kauffman juxtaposed with new acquisitions of a current generation interpreting the concerns of 1969 in order to bring the exhibition up to the present.

Fall Exhibitions Opening event October 25, 12 PM-6PM

In addition to its new exhibition 1969, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center launches its fall exhibitions with an opening celebration. Shows on view: Between Spaces (October 25-April 5) is a multimedia show addressing nostalgic themes with each artist's work turning everyday materials into strange objects; Robert Bergman: Selected Portraits (open now through January 4) features 24 large-scale color portraits of everyday people photographed on the streets of American cities, from 1985 to 1997; and 100 Years (November 1- April 5) outlines a history of performance art in association with Performa, an arts organization presenting and researching performance art. 100 Years travels to other venues with changing pieces for local emphasis.

Affiliated with New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and located in this former school building, exhibitions are devoted to cutting-edge art.
