An artist who draws on traditional Chinese landscape paintings has won an award for his innovative use of digital multimedia.

Yi-Chun Li, a student at the London College of Communication, was awarded the Aspen Online Art Award in association with the Contemporary Art Society for his animated stills of the natural world.

Inspired by ancient Chinese Shan-shui paintings, his proposal for a new piece of digital art work involves an animated video composed of layers of moving graphic images.

The award is the first of its kind in the UK that awards prize money to commission online art, a rapidly emerging field within contemporary art.

Yi-Chun will now go on to construct his virtual art on a larger scale with the £4,000 prize money he has been awarded.

Describing his art work, Yi-Chun said: “The animation will be slow moving, gradually evolving in complexity, with the intention that viewers can briefly escape the real world to meditate over the artwork’s movement, freeing their minds for inner reflection.”

The virtual art work will join the art collection of Aspen Insurance, and will be displayed on the Aspen Art website as well as in Apsen’s offices around the world.

Fabienne Nicholas, head of Art Consultancy at the Contemporary Art Society, said: “Aspen and the Contemporary Art Society have been working together for over a year to develop this award. The Aspen Online Art Award is testament to the company’s commitment to supporting artists.

“The Contemporary Art Society is proud to support this process, which reflects our own mission for building collections, audiences and opportunities for contemporary art.”
