To mark the Jubilee year, a group of artists have created works responding about Queen Elizabeth II's reign, exploring ideas around royal conventions from street parties to memorabilia.
Modern artists including Cathy Lomax, Sadie Hennessey and Enzo Marra have contributed. The exhibited works are fairly provocative, with plenty of post-punk irony. But most of it is concerned with what the gallery describes as "the paradox of our national ambivalence". This is a comment on a modern mood of political opposition to the idea of the monarchy mixed in with the nostalgia having royalty in our culture conjures up.
The irreverent but affectionately titled ‘Diamond Geezer’ celebrates our freedom to laud and loathe our sovereign as we so choose.
