According to a new BBC / Arts Council review, 10 per cent of the adult population listen to Classic FM at some stage every week and 6 per cent to Radio 3, but less than 3 per cent of the entire British population attended a classical music concert in 1993-4. Orchestras were told they could entice bigger audiences with spoken introductions to music and simple marketing methods such as free programmes, video screens or more car-park spaces . . .
