The Independent on Sunday This memorably nervy, funny Bildungsroman from the author of Swimming to Cambodia sees Brewster North escaping from a suicidal mother and the Vietnam draft to explore Amsterdam, India, drugs, beer, Zen, sex (especially 'Tantric' sex) and acting, all the while clinging to sanity by the skin of his teeth. Unstructured and episodic, it often sounds like a particularly long session with a therapist, but an unusually successful one.
