Five Children and It by Edith Nesbit, first published in 1902, is about a family of children who move from London to Kent only to discover a grumpy sand fairy called the Psammead living in a gravel pit near their house. The Psammead is compelled to grant on child's wish per day, greatly improving their scope for adventure.
