Dorothy Koomson: One minute interview

The author of 'That Girl From Nowhere' reveals her favourite author and which fictional character most resembles her

Where are you now and what can you see?

I'm in my bedroom, and I can see the blinds, which are closed because it's nearly 4am and I really shouldn't have the television on but I do. I'm watching something I taped earlier. (I should say 'I recorded' since we don't use videotape or audio any more, but it's a force of habit.)

What are you currently reading?

I'm reading A Proper Family Holiday by Chrissie Manby. I haven't read a book like it in a long time and I'm enjoying it a lot.

Choose a favourite author and say why you admire her/him

A recent favourite is Louise Doughty. I read Apple Tree Yard and was bowled over not only by the story but also the natural way she creates a diverse, interesting and relatable cast of characters.

Describe the room where you usually write

It used to be my bedroom, but now I've moved on to the kitchen, which has the back doors that lead out on to the garden, a TV that needs replacing and the toaster. Important because I've been eating a lot of toast recently.

Which fictional character most resembles you?

At the moment, probably Alice from Alice In Wonderland. I often feel that I've tumbled down a rabbit hole into a surreal world where very little makes sense. I'm sure I'll resemble another character soon enough.

Who is your hero/heroine from outside literature?

No one person, but people who go through difficult times and manage to not only keep going, but also to keep the love and respect of those around them. It's very easy when you're under extreme stress to behave badly and keep behaving badly, those who don't do that are worthy of respect, I think.
