Game of Thrones author George RR Martin releases teaser chapter and 'breaks internet'
Author revealed chapter from forthcoming novel The Winds of Winter
Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has released a sneak preview of his new book The Winds of Winter.
The excerpt, entitled "Mercy", begins: “She woke with a gasp, not knowing who she was, or where. The smell of blood was heavy in her nostrils…or was that her nightmare, lingering?”
Writing on his blog, Martin said the chapter “is actually an old chapter”, but he had not published or posted it before, or read it at a convention.
“So it’s new in that it's material that no one but my editors have ever seen before, but it’s old in that it was written a long time ago, predating any of the samples that you have seen. The first draft was, at any rate. I’ve re-written it a dozen times since then,” he wrote.
But the anticipated teaser from the author caused his website georgemartin.com to crash. “I broke the internet. Sorry about that,” he wrote.
“The upload of the new sample chapter from The Winds of Winter created so much traffic to my website and blog that the servers crashed. This is the first time I’ve been able to get up myself all day.”
The Winds of Winter is the sixth book in the Song of Ice And Fire series, following Game of Thrones (1996), A Clash of Kings (1998), A Storm of Swords (2000), A Feast for Crows (2005) and A Dance with Dragons (2011).
Game of Thrones series four returns to Sky Atlantic on Monday 7 April at 2am, and will simulcast at the same time as the American premiere.
