The more salubrious streets of 1980s South East London are the setting for Fernando's nostalgic and funny debut about life in an extended community of Sri Lankan migrants.
Holding together these interconnecting tales of family life is the story of Preethi, a young woman who develops from a moody teen addicted to Brideshead Revisited videos into a discontented wife.
Casual racism rears its head in many of the stories. Called "chocolate drop" at nursery, Preethi is used to being asked where she comes from: "South London," she says crossly.
