Pick of the picture books: Planet Earth - The Photographs

The BBC's Planet Earth broke all records for its astonishing photography, its massive scope and its unbearably cute baby polar bears emerging from their burrows. Planet Earth: The Photographs (BBC Books, £17.50) is a collection of those photographs, rounded up by series producer Alastair Fothergill and with quotes from notable conservationists.

The pictures, from epic migrating wildebeest to adorable penguins and disgusting cave "snottites", are just as stunning as you remember them. And the message is clear. "Millions of words have been written and spoken about global warming," writes Fothergill, "but for me, the image of the polar bear with the world literally melting beneath its feet carries the most powerful message."
