The anticipation ahead of Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary is growing by the day, with cultural institutions around the world planning tributes to the Bard’s life and work.

In Britain, Benedict Cumberbatch and Judi Dench are starring in the next instalment of BBC2 drama The Hollow Crown, while Shakespeare’s Globe will see the banks of the Thames lined for 2.5 miles with 37 screens showing specially-made film.

You can also expect to see Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes at least once on TV.

Arguably Shakespeare’s most famous play, Romeo and Juliet is getting the special treatment as the celebrations unfold.

A popular success in its day, the Royal Shakespeare Company website writes that the Bard’s 1597 edition was designed to be performed in daylight in an Elizabethan playhouse – with a balcony at the rear of the stage providing Juliet’s bedroom window.

Since then, it had been performed on stages around the world, and adapted for countless productions in film, radio and television.

But how much do you actually know about the play itself? We’ve put together a quiz to test your knowledge on the plot and history of Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo done? Let us know how you get on!
