THERE WAS a time in the mid 1980s when Bob Hoskins (right) scarcely put a foot wrong in his choice of films. In Mona Lisa (10.45pm FilmFour), perhaps his key film from that period, he plays George, a small-time crook who comes out of prison and takes a job minding a call-girl (Cathy Tyson). His problems begin when he finds himself falling for her and he gets mixed up with a distinctly unpleasant hood (Michael Caine). Directed by Neil Jordan, it is showing as part of FilmFour's "Cannes Festival Winners" season.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea (7pm Sky Sports 1), a crucial game in the contest for the Premiership title, should be a positive advertisement for the benefits of foreign imports. Players such as Spurs' David Ginola and Gianfranco Zola of Chelsea have added a great deal to British league football.
