Classical: Sir Simon Rattle

Apparently, Sir Simon Rattle (left) was a promising pianist until he took up the baton professionally. An Evening of Banned Music, in aid of Index on Censorship, has inspired Sir Simon to display his keyboard skills in public again. Teaming up with cellist Lynn Harrell, violinist Tasmin Little and clarinettist Antony Pay, Rattle adds the piano line in Messiaen's riveting "Quartet for the End of Time", composed in a concentration camp. Plus, he accompanies mezzo-soprano Jill Gomez in two settings by Poulenc. Music by Alan Bush, Shostakovich and Conlon Nancarrow makes up what should be an intriguing evening, with all proceeds from the concert going to the Writers and Scholars Educational Trust.
