Opera of the week: Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival, Riverside Studios, London W6

Opera, but not as you know it. Crammed into three long (Thur to Sun) weekends, the sixth Tête à Tête Opera Festival is an orgy of experimental new works and works-in-progress, offering more than 70 performances of 40 pieces by dozens of composers.

Subjects range from the literary – rival responses to Dickens's Miss Havisham c/o Jacques Cohen's The Lady of Satis House and Jilted, co-composed by Michael Henry, Orlando Gough, Jocelyn Pook and Jeremy Peyton-Jones – to the adult, with Philip Venables & Nick Blackburn's Unleashed, an "anti-opera about maleness" (gay maleness) promising "graphic descriptions of sexual acts that some audience members may find offensive".

Tête à Tête's own contributions include adaptations of Elizabeth Bowen's Making Arrangements, composed by Charlotte Bray, and Kafka's Amerika, with music by Samuel Bordoli, both directed by festival founder Bill Bankes-Jones.
