Album: Bach, Violin Sonatas – Zimmermann/Pace (Sony)

Reviewed by Anna Picard

Though pianists and modern violinists record Bach's unaccompanied works as frequently as their period instruments colleagues, modern instruments recordings of the Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard have become very rare.

It's a shame, as there is much to enjoy in this performance. Frank Peter Zimmerman's sound blooms beautifully in the slow movements. Pace's shapely phrasing and articulation are a delight, especially in the extraordinary, five-movement G major Sonata.

Pick of the Album: A perfumed 'Adagio ma non tanto' from the E major Sonata
