Featuring medieval vocal works themed around Jerusalem, the "Daughter of Zion", this album profits greatly from the beautiful acoustic characteristics of the Dome Church of St Nicholas in Haapsalu, which lends spine-tingling presence to the Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis, imparting a glowing, halo-like reverb particularly to the monophonic Gregorian chants.
But it's not simply an historical exercise: the ensemble's leader Jaan-Eik Tulve keenly acknowledges the link between Gregorian chant and the "horizontal" phrasing of such modern Baltic composers as Pärt and Tüür.
