Prom 63: BBC Singers / Hill, Royal Albert Hall, London

The BBC Singers sang Messiaen's Cinq Rechants. Its composer was inspired by both the earlier styles, but his music has nothing fundamental in common with either, so you were left to wonder what it was doing in a programme that then turned into a classical north Indian recital.

Unfortunately, Nishat Khan and the tabla player Rashid Mustafa Thirakwa were left only half an hour to elaborate a raga. They set an intense mood but had to deal hastily with the expansive early stages, so that the fiery virtuosity and the impressively florid drumming appeared to spring from nowhere. Their short, lyrical second piece, relaxed and freer in spirit, was more the real thing.

BBC Proms continue to 13 September (0845 401 5040)
