By Melanie Leather

The comedian and actor Ken Campbell died yesterday at the age of 66.

Campbell found fame as an improviser and pioneer of experimental theatre. His one-man shows, mixing theatre, stand-up and lecture, received rave reviews.

He was last seen on stage only three days ago, performing in his Showstoppers Musicals at the Edinburgh festival.

Campbell was found dead at his home in Epping Forest, Essex. The cause of death has yet to be established.

A former RADA student, Campbell was born in Ilford, Essex, on 10 December 1941. He started the Ken Campbell roadshow in the 1970s, with members including Sylvester McCoy and Bob Hoskins.

His TV credits include Roger in an episode of Fawlty Towers and Alf Garnett's neighbour Fred Johnson in In Sickness and in Health.
