Comic-Con 2014: Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch and Game of Thrones' George RR Martin set to attend

First looks and special footage are expected from many film and TV projects

Comic-Con kicks off this week as some 150,000 fans gather for the sold-out pop culture event at the San Diego Convention Center.

The four day festival, celebrating comic books, film, TV, video games and more, will see studios present previews of their latest projects.

TV in particular is making big waves at Comic-Con with Game of Thrones author and executive producer George RR Martin expected to announce the casting for season five of the hit HBO fantasy drama.

There will also be panel sessions with cast and creators from The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory, Sons of Anarchy, The Vampire Diaries and Orphan Black, among others.

From the film world, Marvel Studios has kept specific details tightly under wraps but rumours suggest fans will hear more about Ant-Man and the next Avengers instalment.


British actor Benedict Cumberbatch will make his Comic-Con debut in support of DreamWorks animation Penguins of Madagascar, but fans will awaiting other news from the Sherlock star too.

Paramount is bringing its Megan Fox-starring, live-action reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the event, while Warner Bros has The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and a Mad Max remake to offer.

Channing Tatum stars in Fox’s animated Book of Life, Frank Miller’s Sin City sequel will feature and Daniel Radcliffe will make his first Comic-Con appearance for Horns. Then there’s the official trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey, set to drop on Thursday.

Other projects expected, but not confirmed, to share first looks, special footage or casting announcements include Jurassic World, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Fast & Furious 7, Terminator: Genesis and Doctor Strange.
