ETCETERA / Competition: Details No 178

IN WHICH painting by which artist can you find these cast-offs?

Last week's detail came from Francisco de Zurbaran's Virgin and Child in the House at Nazareth (it has various other names).

The picture has a finger-pricking theme: the thimbled Virgin sews and weeps as she watches the Child prophetically weaving himself a crown of thorns and bleeding. It's in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The first three correct entries drawn were from: Lynn M Smith, of Chester Le Street, County Durham; Heloise Godfrey, of Routh, Wales; and J E Albutt, of London W2. Each will receive a bottle of champagne, as will the winners of this week's competition. Answers, on a postcard please, to DETAILS 178, The Independent on Sunday, 40 City Road, London EC88 1HP.
