The Fox and the Child (U)

Luc Jacquet, who scored a hit with March of the Penguins, now tries to melt our hearts with this paean to foxes.

It's essentially a nature documentary gussied up as a sentimental drama. A young girl (a poorly dubbed Bertille Noël-Bruneau), wandering the fields and woods near her home in France, takes to following around a fox. Perhaps exhausted by her stalking, the fox eventually allows itself to be fed and petted.

The sylvan landscape is amazing, but you wonder why it's so unpeopled – the girl sees no-one and is allowed to roam all day. Kate Winslet does a syrupy voice-over to this bedtime story, but given what we know of foxes, it's a tough one to swallow.
