Cannes Diary: Sporting hits, A real horror, Place for Penn

by Arifa Akbar

Sporting hits Mike Tyson and Zinedine Zidane have been the toast of the Croisette in past years at Cannes. Eric Cantona was the sportsman of choice this time round in Ken Loach's film. Next year, it may be the turn of tennis titans Rafael Nadal, pictured, and Roger Federer, who are to be the focus of a new documentary by José Luiz Lopez-Linares, according to industry sources at Cannes. The as-yet-untitled film will explore the rivalry and friendship between the hot-blooded Spaniard Nadal and the cool Swiss star Federer, who have had many tussles in finals of major tournaments, from Wimbledon to the French Open.

A real horror Antichrist, by the fêted film director Lars von Trier, was greeted with both laughter and booing at its Cannes competition press screening. The bizarre melodrama, which is vying for the Palme d'Or, is Von Trier's first attempt at a horror movie.

Place for Penn Sean Penn is said to be in talks to star in This Must Be the Place, a film that will mark the English-language feature debut for the Italian film-maker Paolo Sorrentino, who is jury president for the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes. Penn will play a wealthy rock star who becomes bored during his retirement and decides to search for his father's executioner, an ex-Nazi war criminal who is now an American refugee.

Going green Mayor of London Boris Johnson and the industry body Film London launched Green Screen yesterday, a guide for the film and TV industries on how to make their productions more eco-friendly. Emma Thompson gave her backing, saying: "Our planet is our most precious resource and we all have a role to play, both individually and collectively, in helping to preserve it for future generations." On a less sentimental note, she pledged "as of today I will be making changes in my own working practice to reduce my carbon footprint."
