Actress Samantha Morton, 25, got her first break in the TV drama Band of Gold. Her latest role is as the lead in Lynne Ramsay's thriller Morvern Callar.

Do you think Morvern Callar the best thing you've done?

I'm not really sure. What do you think?

Morvern is always listening to her Walkman. If you had to create a soundtrack to your life, what music would you choose?

Joy Division.

You seem to have total confidence in what you do. Is that to do with having to become independent from an early age?

I think that you are who you are, no matter where you come from.

Do you worry about giving in to Hollywood excess?

Even if I did, it wouldn't be wrong as it would be right for me at that time.

Did the fact that you were directed by a female make the sex scenes in Morvern Caller any easier?

Absolutely not, but a bottle of port helped.

What made you want to be in U2's latest video?

The experience!

One of the reasons you did Minority Report was your fascination with the futuristic details. Does that kind of vision scare you?

No, I think that the unknown is titillating.

You've also said you'd hate to be a celebrity – did Tom Cruise offer any advice on avoiding such a fate?

He told me to stop requesting helicopters.

Do you get twitchy when there's no work on the horizon?

I'm petrified of being skint!

Will you work in TV again?

I will if they pay me enough!

Is it true you might play the love interest opposite Pierce Brosnan in his next project?

I'll let you know when I get the script.

'Morvern Callar' is on general release.
