I decided to watch 95 films produced by the British production company Ealing Studios, and blog about them.
My attention was piqued when, earlier this year, Ealing's 80th anniversary was celebrated with new Blu-ray releases of classic comedies such as The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and Whisky Galore! (1949). It provided a reasonable excuse for this movie marathon. I'm a university lecturer who specialises in British cinema, and I realised I had only seen a small percentage of the output of one of British cinema's most famous studios.
I came up with my master list of 95 films (which starts in 1938 and ends in 1959, with the release of the studio's last film, The Siege of Pinchgut). On 21 August 2011, I began watching and blogging.
I'm sure Ealing fatigue will set in, but I'm keeping a few films in reserve – Passport to Pimlico, Whisky Galore! – that I know will tide me over the inevitable rough patch.
