The first trailer for
Captain America: The First Avenger was released online March 23, revealing the war fantasy adventure based on the Marvel superhero comic from the 1940s.
The footage features Chris Evans ( Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Fantastic Four) as Steve Rogers, a scrawny young soldier trying unsuccessfully to enlist in the army during World War II.
On joining a special unit called Operation: Rebirth, Rogers undergoes an experiment inside a mysterious contraption that zaps him with "vita-rays" and transforms him into a perfect human specimen - and into super-soldier Captain America.
When General Chester Philips, played by Tommy Lee Jones ( Men in Black), who narrates the trailer, prepares his super troops for battle with the Nazis, he warns: "Your enemy is not what you expect."
In combat, armed with his indestructible shield, the Captain gets a glimpse of his adversary The Red Skull, about to uncover his evil identity.
The scientist administering the super serum on Rogers is played by Stanley Tucci ( The Lovely Bones) and Hugo Weaving ( Lord of the Rings, Tranformers) portrays The Red Skull who has developed his own technology.
Directed by Joe Johnston ( Wolfman), Captain America hits theaters July 22 in North America and China, followed by Russia, the UK, Europe and Latin America on July 29, and rolls out around the world through August, with Japan following in October.
