Film trailer: Pitt and Penn in 'Tree of Life' by Terrence Malick
Thursday 16 December 2010
The trailer for the much-anticipated film from Terrence Malick,
The Tree of Life, was released online December 15, and stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain (
With a 20 year hiatus between his films, Badlands (1973), Days of Heaven (1978) and The Thin Red Line (1998), the acclaimed director makes up in quality what lacks in quantity.
With this footage from The Tree of Life, Malick exhibits his signature visual style with voice-over narration and involving the themes of man's relationship with nature.
Lush imagery by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki ( Y Tu Mama Tambien, Sleepy Hallow, Ali), an impressionistic vision of the 1950s, of children and scenes from nature create an evocative feeling with the rich lines of dialogue.
The story follows a Midwestern family and the life of its eldest son, played by Sean Penn as he sorts out the past conflicting messages from his parents. He becomes a lost soul in a modern world - once innocent and then disillusioned as he searches for the meaning of life.
Written and directed by Malick, The Tree of Life will release on May 27, 2011.
