Two upcoming films, Scott Pilgrim and The Sorcerer's Apprentice, have ordinary protagonists taking on supernatural challenges.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
The first teaser trailer for this upcoming action comedy, starring Michael Cera ( Juno, Superbad, Year One), is billed as "an epic of epic epicness." The tale follows a jobless but charming bass player with Sex Bob-omb, who must vanquish the seven evil ex-boyfriends of the girl of his dreams in order to win her heart. Exhibiting the cartoon origins of superheroes, the film shows the work of style genre-smashing director Edgar Wright ( Shaun of the Dead). Also features Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick ( Up in the Air) and Mary Elizabeth Winsted ( Live Free or Die Hard). The film opens August 13 in the US. www. scottpilgrimthemovie.com/
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Jay Baruchel ( How to Train Your Dragon) plays an average college student recruited by the sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) for a crash course in the art of magic with laser balls and tricks. The live-action comedy, inspired by the 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' segment of the 1940 Disney classic Fantasia, has Baruchel in the Mickey Mouse role as a reluctant protégé. Set in modern-day Manhattan, the battle ensues against arch-nemesis, evil wizard Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) who is conjured from cockroaches. The film releases July 16 and around the world through the end of August.
