Steve Coogan's most recent film Philomena was awarded five stars from our critic. In the film, he plays world-weary journalist Martin Sixsmith with Judi Dench, who plays Philomena, "a strong-willed woman who generally likes to keep her emotions in check".

The talented British actor, comedian, writer and producer has had his biggest year yet. Starring in four films, he kicked off 2013 with The Look of Love, in which he plays the controversial porn king Paul Raymond, who was once the richest man in Britain owning a property empire on the seductive streets of Soho.

He next played the fictional character he is best known for, Alan Partridge, the middle-aged Norfolk DJ who had his big-screen debut in the film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa. He then posed behind the voice of the animated film character in Despicable Me 2, Silas Ramsbottom, the head of the Anti-Villain League.

It seems like Coogan will close a successful year with a masterpiece of modern cinema, Stephen Frears' Philomena.
