Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' film project
Thursday 28 October 2010
Plans are in the works to transform Michael Jackson's iconic music video "Thriller" from 1983 into a feature with director Kenny Ortega, who directed Jackson's concert film
This Is It and
High School Musical.
The screenplay will be written by Jeremy Garelick (
The Hangover) and the story will involve "the song's folklore, involving Vincent Price and the town he grew up in," according to the Deadline Hollywood blog.
The original 14-minute "Thriller" mini-movie-styled music video, directed by John Landis ( Blues Brothers, Animal House) is the only music video considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant to be preserved for all time" by the National Film Registry of the US Library of Congress.
Jackson's early years are the subject of another film in development from producers Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock ( Up In the Air, I Love You, Man).
In addition, the acrobatic dance troupe Cirque du Soleil is creating live shows inspired by Jackson's music, similar to its productions based on The Beatles and Elvis songs. A live arena-style show, offering the experience of a Michael Jackson concert, is scheduled for the fall 2011 and will tour the world. Cirque du Soleil and the Jackson estate are also developing a permanent Las Vegas attraction to open in late 2012.
