At $230 million, Avatar, the most expensive film ever made, is ready for battle - though its rivals are few this weekend. Moviegoers will descend on theaters for the 3D sci-fi adventure to see what director James Cameron has conjured over 10 years, since his last mega-hit, Titanic.

With tickets already selling out, it might be hard to find a seat. The majority of advance sales are for Avatar, with close to 40 percent of those tickets for the Imax theater experience.

Avatar will launch worldwide, December 16-18, with the exception of a handful of countries (Japan, Poland, Argentina, and Italy). Several cities get the jump on the US release Friday.

This fantasy film follows a wounded ex-Marine torn between earth and the planet Pandora, caught in a battle among the indigenous population of 10-foot blue-skinned humanoids. It stars Sam Worthington ( Terminator Salvation), Zoë Saldana ( Star Trek) and Sigourney Weaver ( Aliens).

After nabbing Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture-Drama, Best Director, Best Score (composer James Horner), and Song, Avatar should benefit from increased curiosity on the part of any doubters.

Cameron has revealed plans to follow up the film with at least two more installments.

Other options this weekend in the US include the new release Did You Hear About the Morgans?, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant, for audiences seeking a laugh instead of a sensational epic.
