Baby Driver: Sony Pictures being sued over improper use of T.Rex Song in soundtrack

Edgar Wright’s latest outing, Baby Driver, has managed huge numbers at the box-office, grossing $140 million worldwide, that number still growing.

Lot’s of the buzz has surrounded the film’s soundtrack, featuring tracks from Blur, The Commodores, Run The Jewels, and — of course — Simon & Garfunkel.

One notable scene also features T. Rex’s track ‘Debora’. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is now being sued by Rolan Feld, the son of frontman Marc Bolan.

"Inexplicably, Defendants failed to obtain — or even seek — the permission of the composition’s U.S. copyright holder Rolan Feld," the complaint reads, which you can read in full here.

"In the six weeks since Feld brought this infringement to Defendant Sony’s attention, Defendants have done little more than point fingers at one another — and they have neither apologised nor offered to pay Feld a reasonable license fee.”

According to the plaintiff, Feld only found out that the track was being used by Wright and Sony Pictures after Sony Music got in contact, requesting the songs licensing for the soundtrack.

The complaint adds: ”In other words, at least one division of Sony had no trouble determining Plaintiff was the rightful owner of the U.S. copyright in the composition.

“Plaintiff promptly informed Defendants (through communications with Sony) that the use of the Composition in the Film was unauthorised.”

Feld claims communications with Sony have broken down, the company having launched an initial inquiry before seemingly stopping completely. Sony has yet to respond.
