Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Eccleston, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, and Robert Redford — incredible actors who all played Marvel Cinematic Universe villains.

Ben Mendelsohn — who recently starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — may soon be joining their ranks, the actor reportedly being eyed to play the villain in Captain Marvel.

While the studio has refused to comment on the casting, Mendelsohn has previously worked with the film’s directors, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, on gambling drama Mississippi Grind.

According to Variety, Mendelsohn would likely play the leader of the Skulls, an alien race of shapeshifters previously teased by Marvel chief Kevin Feige. Mendelsohn also has upcoming villainous roles in Robin Hood: Origins and Ready Player One.

The most recent script for Captain Marvel — which stars Brie Larson as the titular superhero — has been penned by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who previously worked on the Alicia Vikander starring Tomb Raider. Previous versions were written by Inside Out scribes Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman.

Captain Marvel, which will take place in the ‘90s and also features Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, reaches cinemas 8 March 2019.
