Although Marvel has Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok to release later this year, fans are still eager to hear about the studio’s distant future films.

One of those is Captain Marvel, the first female-led blockbuster from the studio, starring Brie Larson — who recently appeared in Kong: Skull Island and Free Fire — as the titular character.

According to Variety, Marvel has tapped Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the duo having previously worked together on Mississippi Grind, It's Kind of a Funny Story, and Sugar.

Sources told the obligation that Marvel had met with multiple contenders for the directing position, but wanted to wait until the script was complete until choosing someone to helm the project.

The report also details how the duo met with the studio multiple times, consistently impressing with their vision for the superhero.

Boden and Fleck also mark another opportunity for Marvel to take talent on the breach of breaking through and taking them mainstream, as done with James Gunn, The Russo Brothers, and Taika Waititi.

Inside Out writer Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman will write the story, which focusses on Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, whose DNA is mysteriously fused with an alien’s.

Meanwhile, in other Marvel news, the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been released, featuring yet more classic 70s tracks. Captain Marvel reaches cinemas 8 March 2019 while Guardians touches down 28 April 2017.
