The long-dreamed of King Kong versus Godzilla movie could finally become a reality with news that Kong prequel Skull Island is moving from Universal to Warner Bros.
As Warner Bros owns the Godzilla sequel rights, the film is jumping ship to unite the two Legendary Pictures franchises and pave the way for a monster pairing, Deadline reports.
Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Straight Outta Compton stars Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell are on board for Kong: Skull Island, which was announced at Comic-Con earlier this year.
The release date has been scheduled for 10 March 2017 and plot details remain scarce at this stage. All we know so far is that a team of brave explorers will venture into giant ape Kong's dangerous island home.
Negotiations on the studio move are yet to be confirmed with Legendary declining to comment.
It would not be the first time that Kong and Godzilla have had a showdown, after Ishiro Honda directed a Japanese sci-fi version in 1962.
