Fantastic Beasts trailer: Dramatic new teaser provides first look at Colin Farrell

The magical movie is the first in a Harry Potter spin-off trilogy and hits cinemas in November

Harry Potter fans excited for upcoming spinoff movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them got their first glimpse of Colin Farrell as wizard Percival Graves in a new teaser trailer released on Sunday.

The short but dramatic clip was shown at the MTV Movie Awards, with powerful Auror Graves seen telling Eddie Redmayne’s nervy lead zoologist: “You’re an interesting man, Mr Scamander.”

“Just like your suitcase, I think there’s much more to you than meets the eye,” he growls ominously as a mysterious set of claws start prising the bag open.

“Kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering human life with a beast, yet one of your teachers argued strongly against your expulsion” Graves continues. “I wonder what makes Albus Dumbledore so fond of you, Mr Scamander?”

Fans have already been told that Newt Scamander carries magical creatures around in his suitcase. Their escape and the ensuing mayhem will be central to the plot, which remains tightly under wraps.

Fortunately, the trailer reveals that Newt is able to lock his suitcase to ‘Muggle Worthy’ to avoid disaster at US customs. When the officer inspects his luggage, it looks like any other bag with no fantastic beasts to be seen.

Sadly, there is little to be seen of these creatures bar a tropical bird not dissimilar to Phoenix Fawkes and a cute aardvark-like animal. “No human could do what this thing is capable of,” Graves says of one beast, but you’ll have to wait until the movie reaches cinemas to meet it.

The final few seconds of the trailer see Scamander descend a staircase inside his suitcase while calling on his No-Maj roommate (Dan Fogler) to follow him. JK Rowling announced that ‘No-Maj’ is the US term for ‘muggle’ last year, to much controversy among American fans.

The film is set in New York in 1929, 54 years before The Boy Who Lived was born and 30 years before Dumbledore became Hogwarts headmaster.

Redmayne presented the trailer at the 10 April awards ceremony, telling the audience that he had enjoyed the “most astounding time” making the movie, which will be the first part of a trilogy.

The Oscar-winning actor walked onto the stage after emerging from a suitcase left on the floor by a Magical Congress of the United States of America dance troupe. “That’s the most extravagant entrance I’ve ever made,” he laughed.

Fantastic Beasts reaches UK cinemas on 18 November, also starring Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton and Jon Voight.
