Cinemagoers have been treated to their first glimpse of Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking, in the first trailer for The Theory of Everything.

The biopic follows the legendary physicist’s personal life from a young Cambridge prodigy to a father of a three and centres mainly on the important relationship with his first wife Jane.

Redmayne, known for his role as Marius Pontmercy in Les Misérables and as a Burberry model, stars alongside Felicity Jones, who plays Jane.

It is unknown to what point in the astrophysicist and cosmologist’s life the movie extends to, for example whether it could cover his divorce from Jane in 1995 and subsequent re-marriage to one of his nurses, Elaine Mason, in the same year.

Hawking, 72, was 21-years-old when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor neurone disease, and was given two years to live.

The big screen adaptation of his early life is being directed by James Marsh, who won the 2008 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for Man on Wire.

The Theory of Everything also stars Emily Watson (War Horse) and David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and is due for release in the US in November, but will come out in the UK in early January 2015.
