Game of Thrones: Sean Bean finally reveals Ned Stark's last words

The response goes against all fan theories

Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean has finally revealed what Ned Stark's final words were when he was executed at the end of season one.

By revealing his last words, Bean has officially destroyed all fan theories about what Ned mumbled before he lost his head.

And we're sorry to disappoint those with weird and wonderful theories - Bean explained that Ned was actually saying a prayer.

"It appears that way [that he's praying], doesn’t it?" Bean told The Huffington Post. "I couldn’t be too specific, because I don’t know if religion [like that] was around in those days, whatever they were."

He added: "I just thought, 'What would you do if this were really gonna happen?’ You probably would pray."

Bean explained that the moment was "quite subtle" because "many people wouldn't pick it up.

"There’s not much you can do really, you’ve got your head on a block," he explained. "That’s about the only thing you can do is murmur."

When Game of Thrones debuted in 2011, Sean played one of the starring roles.

But his tenure on the show didn't last long: Ned was killed when season one ended.

When Ned was executed in public, he was seen muttering to himself just before his head was chopped off with an axe.

Over the years, various fan theories about what Ned actually said have come up.

Some viewers thought Ned said, "I kept my promise," an allusion to Jon Snow's secret origin.

While others believed that he was mumbling "valar morghulis" - a High Valyrian saying that translates to "all men must die."

The stranger theories speculate that he was talking to his son Bran who was psychic and could time travel.
