Iron Man 3 becomes fifth biggest-grossing film of all time

The Marvel film has overtaken Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Marvel’s Iron Man 3 has become the fifth top-grossing film of all time, according to online movie tracker Box Office Mojo.

The sequel, which has now made over $1.14 billion (£760.5 million) in international box office sales, overtook 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon to claim its spot in the top five.

James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic remain the two top-grossing films worldwide, taking $2.7 billion and $2.1 billion respectively.

The Avengers- Marvel’s second title in the top five- is ranked third, with the final Harry Potter film The Deathly Hallows Part 2 ranked fourth.

Iron Man 3, which opened in the UK in April and in the US in May, is the fourth film in the franchise to feature Robert Downey Jr in the title role.

The film has been received well, thanks to its two-part international and domestic release, and has achieved the sixth highest-grossing worldwide opening ever, taking $372.5 million.

Once figures have been adjusted for inflation, however, neither Iron Man 3, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 nor The Avengers make the top 200 domestic grossing films in the US.

Gone with the Wind tops the list for domestic grossing films in the US adjusted for ticket price inflation.
