Maggie Gyllenhaal used her acceptance speech at this year’s Golden Globes to celebrate the wealth of "actual women" cast in roles on screen.

The actress, who won for her performance in The Honourable Woman, paid tribute to the growing number of “complicated women” portrayed on TV.

“I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about the wealth of roles for powerful women in television lately. And when I look around the room at these women who are in here and I think about the performances that I’ve watched this year, what I see actually are women are sometimes powerful and sometimes not; sometimes sexy, sometimes not; sometimes honourable and sometimes not,” she said.

“And what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and in film. That’s what I think is revolutionary, and evolutionary, and it’s what’s turning me on.”

She went on to thank the “wonderfully complicated” women in her life, before rushing to finish her speech in time.

“I gotta thank Hugo Blick who wrote, directed and produced every minute of The Honorable Woman, I share this with you. And to my husband who is a lover of complicated women, obviously. I could never have done this without you. Thank you so much,” she said.
