The award show gets with the times as public will be able to watch the whole evening live on their computer, tablet or smartphone.

Except there is a catch: the show will only be available through ABC's live-stream website and mobile app. And the service is not available to those outside of the US or without the appropriate subscription.

However, it is the first time ever the show will be available to watch live from ABC and on the go through the mobile app.

ABC is also offering all US viewers, independent of their location or cable package, a "second-screen" experience called The Oscars Backstage, "live behind-the-scenes moments you won’t see anywhere else," according to the website.

Through the Oscar.go.com website, users can also find other pre-recorded behind-the-scenes clips, as well as content such as galleries and quizzes.

Also available on the site is a widget showing all nominees and the number of social mentions these have received leading up to the night of the show, a nod towards the prominence of social media during live events.

WATCH ABC, the network's live-stream service is only available in certain areas of the US, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

This is the second major annual event to be live-streamed in 2014; indeed, this year's Super Bowl was available to Fox subscribers through the Fox Sports Go app for a free trial on computers and iPads.
