Quentin Tarantino wants Tom Cruise for new Manson Family murders-inspired film

The drama is the director's first film since The Hateful Eight was released in January 2016

Quentin Tarantino is considering who to cast in his new film, a 1969-set drama set to the backdrop of the Manson Family murders.

Having reportedly spoken with his former stars Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio about potential roles - as well as Margot Robbie who he's rumoured to want for the role of real-life actress Sharon Tate - Deadline claims that Tarantino is considering Tom Cruise for a key role in the film.

This would mark the first time the director has worked with the Hollywood star no doubt leaving film fans intrigued to see just how Cruise would assimilate into a world created by the Pulp Fiction filmmaker.

Pitt previously led Inglourious Basterds while DiCaprio played the villain Calvin Candie in Django Unchained. This next project would mark the seventh time Tarantino has worked with Jackson.

Reports state that the filmmaker's latest script entered into a bidding war with Harry Potter producer David Heyman taking over from Tarantino's regular producing partners at The Weinstein Company in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sandal.

The film will be his first feature since The Hateful Eight which was released in January 2016. Tarantino has been vocal in the past about retiring after making his tenth film - depending on how you count Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2, this next project could be one of his last.

The film is expected to start shooting next year with a 2019 release scheduled.
